How I Scored a Japan Airlines First Class Upgrade at the Airport

I turned a JAL business class seat into a first class one right at the airport, and the whole thing took under 10 minutes. Here is exactly how I did it, the rules that made it possible, and how you can put yourself in the same position.

Walking onto a Japan Airlines flight with a First Class felt unreal. And this was not luck. It was a plan I set up weeks earlier and stuck with. Here is the whole story, and how you can try the same thing.

How It Started

I booked business class from Dallas to Tokyo (DFW to HND, one of the routes that have the newest aircraft A350-1000) for my husband and me. Both seats cost 80,000 miles plus close to $400 each, and I put both of us on one reservation under my account. To get there, I transferred 160,000 Bilt points to JAL, which covered both of our business class seats.

I really wanted to try for first class. The problem: first was not available to book, only by waitlist.

Playing the Waitlist Game

First I called JAL and asked them to separate our reservation, so the agent created a new booking for my husband and left me on my own. That let me add just myself to the first class waitlist.

A few things I learned about the waitlist:

• You need the miles sitting in your JAL account to hold the reservation, which was 45,000 miles in my case.
• The waitlist has a holding period of roughly 8 to 9 days. After that you get dropped, and you have to add yourself back on.
• I did this over and over, and nothing cleared.

But I kept checking the seat map, and the flight showed 2 open first class seats all the way up to the day of departure. So I knew there was a real shot.. and it clearly worked!

Why My Husband Sat This One Out

I did not try to upgrade my husband, and there is a good reason. I found our same route on American Airlines for much less, 60,000 miles plus $5.60, and I explain exactly how in this article. So I cancelled his JAL flight and rebooked him with AA miles (saving 20k miles and almost $400).

You cannot upgrade a flight booked with a partner airline's miles, so first class was off the table for him. But don't feel too bad, though. He was sitting comfortably in business - seat 4K, came to visit me the whole flight, and had caviar and Hibiki whiskey along the way.

The Airport: Under 10 Minutes

Because I went in prepared and knew there were still 2 first class seats open, I got to the airport early and simply asked.

The very first thing they said was, "Do you have the miles in your account? We need to check." I said yes, because I had made sure the miles were ready and waiting.

They verified everything, and told me I was upgraded. The whole process took less than 10 minutes, and I walked straight to the lounge with a first class ticket.

The single most important lesson: when you try for an upgrade at the airport, the miles have to already be in your account. No miles ready, no upgrade.

The Rules That Made It Work

If you want to try this yourself, these are the rules that matter:

• You can only upgrade a ticket booked directly with JAL, meaning with JAL miles. You cannot upgrade a flight booked with a partner airline's miles, and codeshare flights do not qualify.
• The miles must already be in your JAL account before you ask, at the airport or on the waitlist.
• Watch the seat map. Open first class seats are your signal that a same-day upgrade is realistic. Check the seat map tool on seats.aero.

How Much I Spent

You have all been asking me this, so here it is. I spent 80,000 miles on the business class ticket (plus about $400 in taxes and fees). Then, to upgrade from business to first, JAL asked for 45,000 miles, and that was it. No extra cash, just miles.

That 45,000 is the set price to jump from business to first on flights from the US to Japan. Here is the full upgrade chart for this route:

So my first class seat came out to 125,000 miles total (80,000 for the business ticket plus 45,000 to upgrade), plus the roughly $400 in taxes on the original booking. JAL was charging 140,000 for the First Class seat on their website, so upgrading at the airport was actually CHEAPER.
