Over 7,000 Points on a $100 Bloomingdale's Order: The Rakuten, Paze and Chase Stack

Every so often a few offers land at the same store on the same night, and tonight is one of those nights. Bloomingdale's just started accepting Paze, and if you were already going to buy something there, you can stack points three ways on the same order. If you are brand new to Rakuten, a $100 purchase can hand you over 7,000 points. Even if you are not new, you are looking at 20x or more on whatever you buy. Here is exactly how it works, and how to do it before the rate changes.

In this post
1.  How the stack works
2.  Layer 1: start your shopping at Rakuten
3.  Layer 2: pay with Paze on a Chase card
4.  New to Rakuten? Where the 7,000 comes from
5.  Over 7,000 points from a $100 order
6.  How to do it, step by step
7.  Bottom line

How the stack works

Here is the whole idea in one line. Two separate things earn you points, and they do not cancel each other out: how you start your shopping, and how you pay. Start your shopping through Rakuten, then pay with Paze on a Chase card, and you earn on the same purchase twice.

Layer 1: start your shopping at Rakuten

Rakuten is a free shopping portal. Instead of going straight to Bloomingdale's, you go through Rakuten first. The store pays Rakuten for sending you, and Rakuten gives part of that back to you as points. You choose how you get paid, Amex Membership Rewards points or Bilt points (if choosing Bilt, you need at least Bilt Silver status to earn 1:1). Checkout this article to learn more about Rakuten.

If Bloomingdale's is showing 10% in your Rakuten account, that is 10x points. Rakuten rates move around, so check the number in your own account before you shop.

And if you're new to Rakuten, you can earn 5,000 bonus points on your first purchase of $50 or more.

Layer 2: pay with Paze on a Chase card

Paze is just a checkout button, backed by big banks like Chase. Your card is already inside it, with no app to download and no new password. At checkout you tap Paze, get a text code, pick your card, and pay. Your card number stays private the whole time.

Why it matters right now: Chase is giving Sapphire and Freedom cardholders 10 extra points per $1 when you pay with Paze, through December 31. That is on top of what your card already earns.

Eligible cards are the Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, Freedom, Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex. Business cards and authorized-user cards do not count. There is a cap of $1,500 in Paze spending per card each month.

New to Rakuten? This is where the 7,000 comes from

New members who choose Amex earn a 5,000-point bonus after they join and spend at least $50. Pick Amex for the full 5,000. Bilt works too, but without Bilt status those points are cut in half.

Over 7,000 points from a $100 order

Say you are new to Rakuten, Bloomingdale's is showing 10x, and you pay with a Chase card that earns 1x:

  • 5,000 points from the Rakuten welcome bonus. Sign up for free here
  • 1,000 points from Rakuten at 10x
  • 1,000 points from the Chase Paze bonus
  • 100 points from your card's normal earning

That is over 7,000 points from a $100 order. The Rakuten points and the Chase points land in two different accounts, but they are all yours, and you get to pick what you buy.

Already have Rakuten? You still stack the 10x Rakuten, the 10x Chase Paze and your card, so 20x or more on the purchase. You just skip the 5,000 welcome bonus.

How to do it, step by step

Steps v3
How to do it
1
New to Rakuten?
Sign up free and claim your 5,000 bonus points
2
Check that your Chase card shows up in Paze.
3
Open Rakuten, search Bloomingdale's, and check the rate.
4
Click through from Rakuten to Bloomingdale's.
5
Shop like normal.
6
At checkout, tap Paze and choose your Chase card.
7
Pay.

One thing that trips people up: after you click through Rakuten, do not open another portal or coupon extension. It can break Rakuten's tracking and even hide the Paze button. Take a quick screenshot of your Rakuten rate before you pay.

Bottom line

Chase's Paze bonus runs through December 31, but the Rakuten rate can change overnight. So if you already needed something from Bloomingdale's, tonight is the night to line it all up. New to Rakuten? Sign up here
