FLY UNITED FOR JUST 3,500 POINTS (YES, REALLY)

FLY UNITED FOR JUST 3,500 POINTS (YES, REALLY)

There’s a very niche but powerful workaround right now that most people are completely overlooking.

You can book United domestic flights for as little as 3,500 points one-way by using Air India’s Maharaja Club program.

It’s not the most obvious method.
But right now, it’s one of the cheapest ways to book flights within the U.S. using points.

How This Works

Instead of booking directly through United, you’re using a partner airline program.

In this case:

  • You’re flying United Airlines
  • But booking through Air India Maharaja Club

This is where things get interesting.

Air India still uses a more traditional award pricing structure for some partner flights, which means certain routes can price significantly lower than what United would charge for the exact same seat.

Pricing: How Cheap Are We Talking?

  • Starting at 3,500 points one-way (economy)

Yes, really.

Example route:

  • Newark → Washington, D.C.
Available at this rate on multiple dates (depending on availability)

To put that into perspective:

  • United often charges 10,000 to 25,000+ miles for similar routes
  • Other programs usually land around 6,000 to 12,000+ miles

This is a fraction of the typical cost.

Can You Just Buy the Points?

Technically, yes.

You can buy around 3,500 Air India miles for roughly $59 total, which can still be a solid deal if cash prices are high.

But don’t blindly do this. Always compare first.

But… How Do You Get Air India Miles?

Here’s where things get a little more niche.

Right now, ROVE MILES is one of the only ways to earn miles that can be useful here.

If you want to explore it:

  • You can earn 6,500 Rove Miles by SIGNING UP HERE
  • You get free 1,500 miles INSTANTLY, then 5,000 more on your first hotel booking of $500+.
  • You also get INSTANT MILES on non refundable hotel bookings.

Already have an account?

  • Use code JOURNEYONPOINTS on a hotel booking of $500+ to earn an extra 5,000 miles

HOW TO ACTUALLY BOOK UNITED FLIGHTS ON AIR INDIA?

1) Create a free Air India loyalty account.
2) Login, then search for a flight (don't forget to mark PAID BY POINTS before typing the airport codes).
3) Look for routes operated by United

Another route example: EWR-MIA (7,500 miles)

When This Makes Sense (And When It Doesn’t)

This is not a strategy you build your entire travel system around.

This is a tactical play.

Use it if:

  • You need a short domestic flight
  • You find availability at 3,500 points
  • Cash prices are high

Skip it if:

  • Flights are cheap in cash
  • You need flexibility or easy changes
  • You don’t want to deal with a more complex booking process
