If Fiji has been sitting on your bucket list, here's some good news: you can book Fiji Airways flights using your American Airlines AAdvantage miles. That's because the two are partners — Fiji Airways is a full member of the oneworld alliance, which means AAdvantage miles get you onboard.

Where You Can Fly

Fiji Airways flies to Fiji directly from several U.S. cities, including:

  • Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) (according to FlightConnections this direct route ends in September)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Honolulu (HNL)
Flights to Fiji on AA

The Award Price

You can book this flight for as little as 28,000 AA miles in economy or 80,000 AA miles in business class. For reference, according to Google Flights this route usually costs around $4,800 in cash.

Business class awards are much harder to find, but those low prices do exist — it just takes some patience and flexibility to catch them.

One thing to keep in mind: the AAdvantage program seems to price Fiji Airways flights dynamically. So the 28k economy price is the sweet spot to watch for — grab it when you see it.

A Note on Timing

Keep the weather in mind when you plan your trip. Fiji's low season runs November through April, which can mean more rain during your visit. If you want the classic sunny Fiji experience, aim for the drier months.

An Alternative Way to Book

If you don't have AA miles, there's another path. You can also book this same flight through Alaska for 75,000 points in business class or 37,500 points in economy. It's a solid backup if your Alaska balance is healthier than your AA one.

How to Earn More AA Miles

Citi is the only transfer partner that moves points to American AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio, which makes it the go-to program for topping off your AA balance.

If you don't have enough miles for this but want to be ready for the next one — or you're just building your balance for future redemptions — consider a card like the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card or the Citi Strata Premier® Card. Both offer new applicants a generous bundle of Citi ThankYou Points after meeting the minimum spending requirements.

Alternatively, the co-branded Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard is offering 80,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $3,500 in purchases in the first 4 months of account opening.

Final Thoughts

Fiji is one of those destinations that feels impossibly far and impossibly expensive — until you realize a lie-flat business class seat can be yours for 80,000 miles instead of $4,800. The economy price is even more of a steal at 28,000 miles when you can find it. Between AA and Alaska, there's more than one way to make this trip happen. Start watching award space, keep your miles topped off, and paradise is closer than you think.
