Amex Platinum Personal vs Platinum Business: Which One Is Right for You (or Neither)?

They look almost identical and cost the same $895, but the personal Platinum and the Business Platinum are built for two different people. Here is the full breakdown, including which one is better for hotel status, for flights, and who should honestly skip both.

The American Express Platinum and the American Express Business Platinum are two of the most premium travel cards on the market. They look nearly identical, carry the same $895 annual fee, and share many of the same benefits, which is exactly why so many people cannot tell which one they should get.

Full disclosure: I carry both in my wallet. I use my personal Platinum for lounge access, for booking flights directly with the airline to earn 5x, and for the credits, which I genuinely love. I use my Business Platinum to earn 2x points on certain business purchases. So this comparison comes from real, everyday use, not theory.

Below is the full breakdown of every difference, and my honest take on which one is right for you, or whether you should hold off on both.

The Quick Basics

Here is where they are the same and where they split, fast:

Amex Platinum vs Amex Platinum Business

A quick note on that business bonus: when I applied for my Amex Business Platinum, the 300,000-point offer was not even live, and I only earned 250,000 points. So today's offer is elevated, which makes it a killer time to apply if the business card is the right fit for you.

The real differences are in the earning categories, the credits, and the details below.

But I Don't Own a Business?

This is probably the question I get the most. The good news is that you don't need a corporation or an LLC to apply for an American Express business card.

Many people qualify as a Sole Proprietor using nothing more than their Social Security Number. If you:

  • Sell on eBay
  • Walk dogs
  • Drive for Uber
  • Freelance
  • Create content
  • Tutor
  • Have any side hustle where you intend to make a profit

...you may qualify.

This isn't my opinion. It's directly from American Express. Check it here.

Which Is Better for Hotel Status?

This one is a tie. Both the personal Platinum and the Business Platinum give you the exact same complimentary hotel status: Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, Hilton Honors Gold, and Leaders Club Sterling with Leading Hotels of the World. You just have to enroll, and no stays or spending are required to get it.

So if hotel status is what you are after, pick whichever card wins for you on the other points below, because on status they are identical.

Hotel status Amex Platinum Amex Business Platinum
Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
Hilton Honors Gold
Leaders Club Sterling (Leading Hotels of the World)
It's a tie. Both cards give the exact same hotel status. Enrollment required, no stays or spending needed.

Which Is Better for Booking Flights with Points?

It depends on how you like to book.

If you transfer your Membership Rewards points to airline partners (usually the best value, and how I book premium cabins), both cards are identical. They earn the same type of points (Membership Rewards) and transfer to the same airlines.

The difference shows up two other ways:

  • Earning points on flights you buy with cash: the personal Platinum earns 5x on flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel. The Business Platinum only earns 5x when you book through Amex Travel. So if you often book directly with airlines, the personal card earns more.
  • Booking flights with points through Amex Travel: the Business Platinum gives you 35% of your points back when you pay with points for flights through Amex Travel (business or first on any airline, or economy on your one selected airline), up to 1,000,000 points back a year. The personal card does not have this. If you like the simplicity of booking through Amex Travel with points, the business card stretches them further.

5x on flights booked directly with airlines
5x on flights booked through Amex Travel
35% of points back when you pay with points (Amex Travel, up to 1,000,000 a year)
If you transfer points to airlines, it's a tie. The personal card earns more on flights booked directly with the airline, while the business card gives you 35% of your points back when you pay with points through Amex Travel.

Always compare: A 35% points rebate doesn’t automatically make this the best way to book. Always compare the total points needed through Amex Travel with the cost of booking an award directly through the airline or a transfer partner before using your points.

How I Use Both Cards

Since I carry both, here is exactly how they earn their keep for me.

My personal Platinum: I use it for lounge access, for booking flights directly with the airline (that 5x really adds up over a year), and for the lifestyle credits, which I actually use and enjoy rather than let sit unused.

My Business Platinum has one main job in my wallet: earning 2x points on certain business purchases, including larger purchases of $5,000 or more and business categories. That 2x on big-ticket spend is something the personal card simply cannot do. I have a favorite card I use for everyday spending, and I'm currently earning 3x points per dollar with it.

Which Makes More Sense for Your Spending?

This is really the whole decision, and it comes down to what you spend on.

Choose the Amex Platinum personal if most of your bigger spending is personal and travel, and you want the lifestyle credits (dining, lululemon, Uber, entertainment). The lower spend to earn the welcome bonus ($12,000 over 6 months) is also more realistic for an individual.

Choose the Amex Platinum Business if you have real business expenses, even from a side hustle, and can hit the higher spend ($20,000 in 3 months). It earns 2x on purchases of $5,000 or more and on business categories like shipping, electronics, and software, and its credits (Dell, Adobe, Indeed, wireless) are built for running a business. It also comes with a bigger welcome bonus (as high as 300,000 points) and no preset spending limit.

Simple rule: personal spender, personal Platinum. Business spender who can hit the spend, Business Platinum.

Who Should Consider Neither?

I would rather be honest than push you into an $895 card you will not use. Consider skipping both if:

  • You only fly a couple of times a year, so you would not get enough out of the lounges and travel credits to cover the fee.
  • You know you will not use the monthly and annual credits, which take some effort to remember and enroll in.
  • The $895 fee makes you nervous, or you are still building your points foundation.

If that is you, a card like the Amex Gold or a lower-fee travel card is a smarter place to start. These Platinum cards only pay off when you actually use the perks.

Bottom Line

Same fee, same lounges, same hotel status. The personal Platinum is the everyday traveler's card, with lifestyle credits and a more reachable welcome bonus. The Business Platinum is the business spender's card, with a bigger bonus, business credits, and 35% back when you book flights with points through Amex Travel, if you can hit the higher spend. And if you will not use the perks, it is completely fine to skip both for now.
