A brand new route has unlocked one of the best First Class redemptions available with points.
You can now fly Etihad First Class for 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles + $39 in taxes and fees, thanks to Etihad's new Tokyo (NRT) → Abu Dhabi (AUH) route, which launched on June 16, 2026.
That's an 11-hour First Class flight for 11.6 cents per point in value.
How to Book It
Search NRT → AUH on the American Airlines website. Your best chance of finding award space is often close to departure.
Why This Flight Stands Out
You'll be flying in Etihad's First Class Apartment, one of the most distinct First Class products in the world. Instead of a standard seat, you get an oversized private suite with a separate armchair and a bed, along with premium dining and service.
This route runs on Etihad's A380, which now flies daily between Abu Dhabi and Narita.
For a First Class product that typically requires far more points to access, this is a comparatively accessible way to book it. More info about this experience is available on Etihad's website.
How to Earn American Airlines Miles
There are a few ways to earn American Airlines miles.
You can transfer Citi ThankYou Points to American Airlines:
- 1:1 if you have a premium Citi card.
- 700 American miles for every 1,000 Citi points if you have a non-premium Citi card.

You can also transfer Marriott Bonvoy points, though the rate is far less favorable: 3 Marriott points = 1 American Airlines mile.
Or you can earn American Airlines miles directly with one of Citi's American Airlines credit cards.
