The Cheapest Ways to Book United Flights Using Points & Miles

Only two flexible points programs transfer to United at 1:1, so if you don't have those, booking through a Star Alliance partner can be your way onto a United flight using points. Here are the cheapest programs to use, ending with the one that beats them all.

Here is something a lot of people don't realize: only two flexible points programs transfer to United MileagePlus, Chase and Bilt. If you have either of those, you can book United with your own points. If you don't, you are not out of luck. Because United is part of Star Alliance, you can still fly United on points by booking the same flights through a partner program, and often for fewer miles.

One thing to know going in: there is an increasing tendency for airlines to keep their best award space for their own loyalty program members. So partner award space is not guaranteed on every route, which I explain more below.

IN THIS POST
  1. 1.Why booking United through a partner can be cheaper

Why Booking United Through a Partner Can Be Cheaper

United prices its own award seats dynamically, so the miles needed can be high and unpredictable. The same seat can sometimes show up as a "Saver" partner award to other Star Alliance programs, and each program charges its own price. When it does, booking the identical United flight through the right partner can cost you less miles.

One important caveat: this does not work on every route. Partner airlines can only book the seats United chooses to release to them. If United does not release award space on a flight, that flight will not be available through any partner, no matter how many miles you have. So always check partner availability first, and treat these programs as a way to pay less when the space is there, not a guarantee on every route.

Let's put it to the test: I'm pricing the exact same United flight, Houston (IAH) to New Orleans (MSY), through United and each partner, then crowning the cheapest way to book it.

IAH-MSY Booked on United Airlines
IAH-MSY Booked on United Airlines

United Airlines is charging 10,200 miles + $5.60 for an Economy seat between IAH-MSY. Let's see how much the partner airline are charging for this same flight..

Air Canada Aeroplan

Both Aeroplan and United MileagePlus now price United-operated award flights dynamically, meaning the number of points or miles required fluctuates depending on demand. For close-in, short-haul flights on popular holiday dates, MileagePlus may price higher than Aeroplan.

Since the price is dynamic, check both and book whichever one is cheaper for your dates.

IAH-MSY Booked on Air Canada

Air Canada is charging 10,000 miles + CA$47 (around $34 USD) for an Economy seat between IAH-MSY. Less miles than United, but more expensive in taxes & fees.

How to search and book flights

Create a free Aeroplan account, then search for your United flight to confirm award space is available. Once you find it, transfer your points into Aeroplan and book.

Avianca LifeMiles

LifeMiles uses an award chart to price award flights on Star Alliance partners, and it charges no fuel surcharges. Domestic U.S. flights on United start at 10,000 LifeMiles each way, as long as you stay within the same region.

Here is my honest take: I usually don't recommend transferring your hard-earned flexible points to LifeMiles, because they regularly run a 160% points-sale promotion. When that happens, you can often just buy the exact miles you need at a low price instead of burning your valuable transferable points. And because United's own pricing is dynamic, always check United too. Sometimes booking direct ends up cheaper, so compare before you commit.

IAH-MSY United Flight Booked on LifeMiles
IAH-MSY United Flight Booked on LifeMiles

LifeMiles is charging 10,000 miles + $5.60 for an Economy seat between IAH-MSY. Less miles than United (same as Air Canada), same taxes & fees as United. Is this the winner?

How to search and book flights

Create a free LifeMiles account, then search for your United flight to confirm space. Once you find it, either buy the miles during one of their sales or transfer them in (your call), and book.

Air India

This is the winner, the cheapest way to book United flights with points and miles.

You can book United flights on Air India for as low as 3,500 miles in economy, or 7,000 in first. There is no published award chart, but prices appear to be fixed. Play around with routes you are interested in, or use Air India's award pricing calculator to check a specific route, and you can book United flights online. Flights under roughly 600 miles hit that 3,500 floor.

IAH-MSY United Flight Booked on Air India
IAH-MSY United Flight Booked on Air India

AND THE WINNER IS: Air India is charging 3,500 miles for an Economy seat between IAH-MSY. Air India does not show the taxes and fees until you have the miles in your account to book.

How to search and book flights

First, sign up for a free Air India Maharaja Club account and log in. Small tip: if you have trouble changing your nationality from India during sign-up, click the text field and type "united states of america."

Then search for your flight, but change the payment option to points first. There is a dropdown on the right side that is set to cash by default, and you have to switch it to points. This matters: if you do not select points first, the tool will not recognize a United-operated airport code, because those airports are not served by Air India.

Once you find award space, transfer your Rove miles into Air India and book online. One quirk to know: Air India does not show the taxes and fees until you have the miles in your account to book. I have not booked one myself, but it looks like about $18 each way for a domestic United award.

How to get Air India miles

Here is the catch, and the good news. Rove is the only place currently transferring to Air India at the time this article was published, and they transfer one-to-one, which means as few as 3,500 Rove Miles can be enough for a United domestic economy award. Lucky for you, Journey on Points partners with Rove and can give our readers free miles.

You get 1,500 miles instantly when you sign up, plus another 5,000 miles when you book your first hotel of $500 or more through Rove using the code JOURNEYONPOINTS. That is 6,500 free miles I am giving you that you can put straight toward your United flights.

One heads up if you are booking for two. If you have never flown Air India, you can only book award tickets for yourself, not a second person. To book for someone else, Air India requires that you have completed 15 days as a Maharaja Club member and flown at least 2 Air India flights on different booking references (PNRs) credited to your account. The easy workaround: have your travel partner open their own free Rove account, grab the same free miles, and book their own ticket. Problem solved.

Bottom Line

The same United seat can cost wildly different amounts depending on which program you book through. Remember, only Chase and Bilt transfer to United directly, so if you don't have those, a Star Alliance partner is your way onto a United flight using points. For short flights, Air India is the cheapest by far, as low as 3,500 miles one-way, and Rove is your way in, with free miles to start. Aeroplan and LifeMiles are the workhorses for everything else. Just remember to check availability and compare prices before you transfer, since pricing is dynamic and award space is never guaranteed.
